Text differences: one inserted line is not three changes

Comparing the first line with the first line and so on makes an insertion look like many changes. We ran three small inputs through Apps24's line-alignment algorithm: an inserted line, different newline styles, and a trailing space.

Input and result

alpha / beta / gammaalpha / inserted / beta / gammamatch / added / match / match
alpha\r\nbetaalpha\nbetamatch / match
"alpha""alpha "changed

What the result means

Inserting 'inserted' between alpha and beta returned match, added, match, match. Beta and gamma remained aligned. CRLF versus LF alone returned two matches because newline styles are normalized. By contrast, 'alpha' versus 'alpha ' returned changed: the trailing space matters. This is line comparison, not word-level highlighting.

What to do next

1. Paste the original and modified text separately. 2. Compare and look for added/removed rows, not just shifted line numbers. 3. For a visually identical changed row, check spaces and case. 4. Return to editing to test a smaller excerpt. If you need to audit newline bytes, use a byte-aware editor instead.

Limits and test conditions

Verified on 2026-10-28 against compareTextLines with fixed strings, not private documents. The limit is 200,000 characters combined and 4 million line pairs. Whitespace is not ignored; CRLF/LF/CR are intentionally unified. The JSON download contains exact inputs and result rows.
